CHALLENGED

Isn't that what a blog, or most any writing, is supposed to do? Stir up a bit of discussion? Challenge thought?

"Really? You believe God created Down Syndrome?"

My response:

"Really......Yes!"

Whoa, that is a stretch. If I believe that, then I must believe He created all "Syndromes".

Don't you?

Is there another creator?.....is anything outside of God's sovereignty?

To borrow from A.W. Tozer:

"Were there even one datum of knowledge, however small, unknown to God, His rule would break down at that point. To be Lord over all the creation, He must possess all knowledge. And were God lacking one infinitesimal modicum of power, that lack would end His reign and undo His kingdom; that one stray atom of power would belong to someone else and God would be a limited ruler and hence not sovereign."

Another question comes:

"Why would you want to serve a God who would create Down Syndrome?"

My answer:

"Why would I want to serve a God who is taken by surprise by Down Syndrome?"

All believers can probably agree that God's ways are not our ways, and His purposes are much higher and more magnificent than any of us could ever begin to imagine or conceive. In addition, I would argue the most wonderful aspect of serving a God who is completely in control, is the fact that He is completely in control. Perhaps this is the only place we can truly know peace.

"What about free will?"

Yes, what about free will.....how can God be completely sovereign and also allow man to exercise free will?

In His complete sovereignty, He created free will too. While we have been given free will to choose either good or evil.....God's way or Enemy's way.....ultimately, the end is the same no matter the choice:

For instance, if I drive to the grocery with the kids, they have no choice of where they are going once they are in the car. None of them can drive, so they are going to end up where I am taking them. Everyone in the car understands "who" is in the driver's seat and in control. Sovereignty. While on the journey, however, the kids may choose not to behave....."I don't want to wear a seat belt"....."He hit me!"....."I don't want to go to the grocery store!".....OR they may choose to obey, sitting respectfully and wearing a seatbelt on the journey to the store........free will. The free will choice doesn't change the destination at all. We are still going to the grocery! Sovereignty AND Free Will at work.

In the same way, all humanity is on a road to eternity. God is in the driver's seat. We can choose to trust and obey Him on the journey OR we can choose to misbehave and choose to do things our own way. The destination is the same.....we all will stand before Him.

To close, I don't fully understand God's purpose when it comes to Down Syndrome, but through my choice of faith, I trust Him. Unfortunately, in our country, 92% of women who find out they are expecting a child with Down Syndrome make a free will choice to abort their unborn baby. God's sovereignty vs. man's gift of free will?
Something to ponder.

Exodus 4:11:
"Then the Lord said to him: "Who has made man's mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord?"

  2. I just found your blog and am so encouraged by your family and your commitment to the Lord in ALL things. Our family is praying for your family. Hats off to Lydia and her great faith. (On a seperate note, we have been looking and looking for a black and white dutch rabbit in TN for my son for a pet, and I saw the sweet picture of Hope with a black and white bunny. How funny that we would see a bunny here!! God is sweet and funny sometimes. Any chance the owners have anymore for sale for a pet?) May your family be truly blessed in all your efforts for His kingdom. Heidi Rand

  4. You know how I know that God created Down Syndrome? Because there is no love like the love from a child with DS. It is the closest, most pure love I know.

What an amazing thing He has done to show you and others He is the One in control and He willed your family to adopt this darling little one whom He created and loves. What a mighty God we serve!

  7. I love how so firmly grounded you are in the love and power of our Almighty God....He is good and his creation is a reflection or expression of who He is...that includes all of his precious children! Thank you for being such an awsome advocate for kids with Downs.
